2009 Update

December 30, 2009

This has been a busy and wonderful year for Africa Mission Services! Several construction projects have been completed since last winter.

In January, a volunteer crew from Loma Linda University, led by Dustin Aho, built another classroom at Oloosinon school, which currently houses the lively, determined students of the 8th  grade.

In May, a group from Washington led by Isaac Heckman completed construction on the maternity ward at Engos Clinic, including painting beautiful colors on the walls and building furniture for the rooms. In June a group of two dozen medical professionals from Southern University in Tennessee, led by Doctor and Judy Winters, came for two weeks, performing bush clinics and handing out used clothing to scattered
villages.

In October a team of women from Australia carried out several community service projects at the clinic and the schools, including painting the maternity ward at Engos with brightly colored animals to create a “Happy Room.”

AMS is also midway through construction of a women’s curio shop. When complete, it will contain 32 stalls where women can display their wares for tourists visiting from nearby safari lodges. These and other past projects continue to impact the local Maasai community in powerful ways, as education, health and commerce create opportunities for personal growth and prosperity without which this culture would be left behind. When we tell them, “another volunteer group is coming soon…,” they smile and cheer!
