In between building a home for the clinic’s doctor, the Mount Pisgah Academy students raised money to buy lunches for the more than 100 students from Oloosinon Primary School. These students went without lunch daily because they lived too far away to return home and come back in time for afternoon classes, and were too poor to pay for lunch at the school.
“Can you imagine going without lunch?” One of the parents in the group asked as she takes out her share of the donation.
The group raised $620 through the leadership of Isabella (Mex), an 18-year-old senior. The money was used to purchase bags of maize and beans and cooking oil; the extra funds purchased footballs and volleyballs so the students from Oloosinon will not have to play with rag balls.
“I think God chose the people that needed to come here individually,” says Isabelle, referring to the fact that some of the kids in the mission group really had to work hard to raise funds to come on the trip, and the impact the trip had on them.
Isabella is now confident she wants to be a missionary nurse.
“This trip has made me realize that I need to appreciate the little things, I will be less whiney,” she said.
Money is not everything, the students agreed. On their last afternoon at Mara West they visited a Maasai Boma, and many of the student were in tears after experiencing how Maasai children live.
“I saw a kid with about 20 flies around his mouth and he was smiling. They sleep in a hot hut with animals and they wake up every morning and they are happy. Money is not everything. I get depressed sometimes and I have everything. You give candy to the kids and they are happy,” said a teary Isabelle.
